Our verdict
ChatGPT by OpenAI
The most complete all-round AI assistant, and the free plan is now genuinely useful with unlimited GPT-6 text chats. Plus at $20 a month is the plan most people should pay for. Pro only makes sense for very heavy reasoning work.
- Best for
- Anyone who wants one assistant for writing, questions, files, images and voice, plus people who rely on custom GPTs and scheduled tasks.
- Skip it if
- People who mostly work with very long documents or live inside Google Workspace, where Claude or Gemini fit better.
- Pricing
- Free; Go $8/mo (US); Plus $20/mo; Pro from $100/mo ($100, $200 or $500 tiers). All billed monthly.

What we like
- Free plan includes unlimited GPT-6 text chats
- The widest feature set of any assistant, from deep research to custom GPTs and scheduled tasks

- One switch turns off training on your chats
What could be better

- Four GPT-6 model names to keep track of
What’s new in ChatGPT this autumn
OpenAI replaced its whole model line-up in September and October 2026. The GPT-6 family now has four members, and you’ll see them in different places:
| Model | Released | What it’s for | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | Sep 3 | The most capable, for the hardest reasoning | ChatGPT Pro, API |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | Sep 29 | The everyday workhorse | API |
| GPT-6 Luna | Sep 22 | Fast and very cheap | API |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | Oct 26 | Computer use and reading screens | ChatGPT Work and Codex (paid plans), API |
The headline for most people: the free plan now includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6. You only need to pay for heavier research, the advanced reasoning models and the extra tools.
Which ChatGPT plan should you pick?
| Plan | Price | What you get | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited GPT-6 text chats, limited deep research and memory | Occasional use, trying it out |
| Go | $8/mo (US) | Everything in Free, with more room to work | Students and light daily users |
| Plus | $20/mo | GPT-6 advanced reasoning, more deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs | Most people who use it for work |
| Pro | From $100/mo | Pro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra, maximum deep research and memory | Researchers, analysts, heavy coders |
Prices from OpenAI’s pricing and help pages, checked October 28, 2026. Go uses local pricing outside the US, and none of the plans offer a yearly discount.
Our take: Plus is the sweet spot. Go is a good, cheap upgrade if the free limits annoy you. Pro is only worth it if Astra-level reasoning saves you hours every week.
What ChatGPT does best
Breadth. No other assistant packs as much into one app: writing, deep research reports, file analysis, image creation, voice conversations, custom GPTs and scheduled tasks that run on their own. If you want one tool that does a bit of everything well, this is it.
Getting started. ChatGPT is the easiest assistant to pick up. Most guides, templates and prompts online were written for it, so help is never far away.
Agents and automation. With GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, paid users get a model built to operate a computer and read what’s on screen. OpenAI prices it at half the API cost of GPT-6.1 Sol.
Where it falls short
- The best reasoning is expensive. GPT-6 Astra powers Pro’s reasoning, and Pro starts at $100 a month.
- Model names are confusing. Astra, Sol, Luna and Terra each live in different places. Most people should just use the default and not worry about it.
- It still makes things up. Like every chatbot, ChatGPT can state wrong facts confidently. Use deep research, which links sources, for anything you plan to repeat or publish, and open the links.
- Long documents. It handles big files well, but for very long contracts and reports we’d still reach for Claude first. See our guide to summarizing long PDFs.
Privacy and safety
By default, your conversations can be used to train OpenAI’s models. You can turn this off in Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone; new chats after that aren’t used for training. Voice mode has its own separate setting.
ChatGPT is open to anyone 13 or older (or the minimum age in your country), and under-18s need a parent’s permission.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main paid plan | Plus, $20/mo | Pro, $20/mo ($17 yearly) | AI Pro, $19.99/mo |
| Top tier | Pro, from $100/mo | Max, from $100/mo | AI Ultra, from $99.99/mo |
| Newest top model | GPT-6 Astra | Fable 5.1 | Gemini 4 Argon |
| Training on your chats | On by default, one-switch opt-out | You choose | Human reviewers may read chats |
| Best at | Doing everything in one app | Long documents, careful writing | Google apps, research, images |
Read our Claude review and Gemini review for the details.
Bottom line
ChatGPT is still the best single AI assistant for most people, and GPT-6 on the free plan makes it easier than ever to start. Pay for Plus if you use it every day. Skip Pro unless you know exactly what Astra’s extra reasoning is worth to you.
